Excellent broad survey of the development of religion in North America/United States. It begins with the Spanish missionaries and the French Jesuits, and on into the various religious events that unfolded in the United States including the Great Awakening and other revival movements. The emphasis of the book is on the religious diversity of the land and the individual pilgrimages people and groups have made while coming to this land. Worth a read to any serious student of religion or American religiosity. I've personally exchanged emails with Dr. Marty, and he's a class act all the way around. He's a tenured Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago Divinity School. 8)
