Has anyone heard of this? I had not until I came across it in a Clive Cussler book (Plague ship) believe it or not. Here is a link to it on Wkipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731I looked up some other articles as well. The atrocities rival anything the Germans ever did.I thas been nicknamed the Asian Auschwitz. It is estimated that at least 200,000 died from their experiments alone. Some make the estimates much higher.I looke at some of the images, that will be the last time.Unlike the Germans, who have apoligized for the Holocaust, the Japanese have never come close.
I have heard of it and read a little bit about the atrocities committed by the Japanese in the war. The reasons it is not well known in the states is 1. the American fixation on the war in Europe; 2. The Japanese essentially ignore that anything happened and deny it when it is brought up; lastly 3. the victims of Japanese atrocities do not have as loud a voice as the victims of the Nazi's.The Koreans can't even get the Japanese to admit that they used Korean "comfort women" during Japan's occupation of that country despite moutains of proof that the Japanese did use them.
Some of the things I read they were doing to people I hadnt even heard of the Nazis doing. It was beyond anything I had ever heard of. I had to stop looking at the images or it would have given me nightmares.
The Nazi's did some pretty bad stuff too. I would say that both sides crimes were comparable in intensity if not scale. There is a pretty good description of some of the stuff the nazi's did at the UMKC law school site at http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/nuremberg/nuremberg.htm
