Hi everyone I wanted to thank you for this forum. I have been trying to find a good discussion forum for history online and the great things about this are that is it ACTIVE, there are many topics, and knowledgeable folks here!
Welcome aboard Jessica. I think you will find that there are many people here that love having substantive discussions about history. I am a Prussian and military History guy myself. Unfortunately American history generally bores me and has since high school. I have always thought American history was too much about legislation and not enough about what people really did.
Your area of history is interesting!Prussian history...now that is interesting. In doing genealogy research on my dad's side of the family I find that in the census records in 1850 they are from Holland, in 1860 from Germany and in 1880 from Prussia. Ok which one LOL. I was hoping that in the course of taking some EUH courses I'd learn about those areas more to help determine what area may have at one time been all three. Does that make sense?
Actually, the genealogical and census records do make sense depending on what town or area he was from. The state of modern Germany was not fully formed until 1871 and even then it was more of a confederation. For example, Bavaria was a separate kingdom until 1918. Germany as we see it on the map today only dates from 1991. Large areas of Northern Poland were German until the end of WWII.I actually got into Prussian history because I felt that Germany is very misunderstood in the west. I changed my mind after I lived over here for the first time from 1995-1998. Before then my interest was WWII but now that bores me because it is so overworked.
Welcome aboard Jessica! WCF has been predominantly male (except for BensGal), so it is great to add to the gender diversity here. 🙂 Welcome aboard, and it's never too late to go back to school!
