The Providence Athenaeum is not a public library. Membership isn't cheap ($155/yr), but the collection they possess is amazing. (don't go by their online catalog, it is far from complete). Spent a few hours there yesterday afternoon. It is a history major's heaven! The have volumes of everything..all the Cambridge Histories, many volumes of European, British, Irish, Greek, Roman history, volumes from the World Wars, and tons of other books by well-known authors and scholars. Members can also use the RISD library (good if you're researching art history). They'll even let you use some of the rare books. It is the oldest library in RI and the 4th oldest (or so they claim) in the US.
I wish I had access to something like that. Unfortunately, living in Germany I have to be thankful for the internet or I would spend tons more money than I already do buying books. I envy you. 🙂

Funny....depending on what I'm studying each semester, I would love to have your access to primary sources in towns in Germany. Secondary sources are great, but the idea of going though original documents that haven't been translated leaves the door open for so much more.
I haven't had opportunity to test my access to primary sources in Germany yet. That will come this summer and fall when I get serious about writing my thesis. I plan on visiting the battlefield of Koniggratz in Czech and I have already spoken with the curator at the museum there. He says he will let me look at the primary sources he has and if he likes me he will write me a letter of recommendation to the State archives of both Austria and Germany.
