Maybe it's just me, but can someone point out ANYTHING that makes sense in this article? ???Hurricanes in the Atlantic are more frequentHere's some classic quotes from the article:"Study leader Michael Mann from Penn State University believes that while not providing a definitive answer, this work does add a useful piece to the puzzle." (comment: This is the same "inaccurate hockey stick graph because of math errors" Michael Mann"The last decade has seen an average of 17 hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic - earlier in the century, half that number were recorded. " (hmmm, maybe only half were recorded because we didn't have all those recon planes in the earlier half of the century)."Dr Mann's team also used a pre-existing computer model of hurricane generation to estimate activity over the same 1,500-year period. The model includes three factors known to be important in determining hurricane formation: sea surface temperature in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, the El Nino/La Nina cycle in the eastern Pacific, and another natural climatic cycle, the North Atlantic Oscillation. " (does this model factor in wind sheer too and localized low fronts?)"Then, he says, an extended period of La Nina conditions in the Pacific - which aid hurricane formation - co-incided with relatively warm conditions in the Atlantic."which is followed by this contradiction:""Even though the levels of activity are similar (between 1,000 years ago and now), the factors behind that are different," said Dr Mann. "So is he saying la Nina has something to do with warmer oceans and hurricane formation? YesSo is he saying La Nina doesn't have anything to with warmer oceans hurricane formation? YesSo what is it, "doc"?And this guy is a major consultant of the AGWers??? Scary isn't it?
Vulture6ParticipantNo doubt this was a government funded study!Just to be clear, 1000 years ago (roughly 1000 to 1010 AD)- Leif Ericson discovered "Vinland"- The Chinese invented gunpowder- World population was estimated at 200 million people- The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was burned by Muslims under Caliph Hakim of Egypt- England was divided, part ruled by (in my opinion the greatest name for a king ever) Ethelred The Unready and another significant portion under the Vikings.- Central and Eastern Africa was ruled largely by the Bantu- In North America, the Mississippian transformation was taking place (the shift of native American tribes from fishing and collecting largely to agriculture).- The "Medieval Optimum" was recorded by scientists of the time - the phenomenon that the sun was brighter and it is believed that temperatures were 1 to 2 degrees higher globally than they are today.Based on this, how exactly is he reliably estimating surface temperatures of the tropical Atlantic?
scout1067ParticipantIt sounds like both bad reporting and bad science. I like this quote the best:
“Even though the levels of activity are similar (between 1,000 years ago and now), the factors behind that are different,” said Dr Mann.
That makes me say HUH? ??? That sentence makes absolutely no sense. He also fails to say in which way the factors are different. I get the impression he is leaving something out, perhaps something that does not fit his pet theory that human caused GW is responsible for current supposed higher temperatures and hurricane activity but the same conditions and storms in the past were perfectly natural I guess. It looks liek someone manipulating the data to fit the theory instead of adjusting theory to fit the data.Godd catch ski.
