My basement has flooded before, but only a little. This time I have 6+ inches now and it's supposed to rain a lot today. Sump pump is old and not working. Probably will go to a Home Depot and just get a regular submersible water pump Maybe the gods of global warming are punishing me because I'm a non-believer. I'm just wondering why no one from the Obama administration hasn't come to rescue me yet. 😀 So how do I enlist the Federal government's help?
Thanks. It's only getting worse. I have about 2 feet now. Home depot and all the other hardware stores were sold out of pumps. I bought a wet-vac, but that's useless right now. Everytime I pour it out the basement door, more water comes in. 😮 Luckily, my backyard is level with the basement floor, but a lot of water accumulates. The Fire Dept came, but couldn't do anything because there's no place to put the water.I have a bunch of junk in the basement, so there's not much loss (and good reason to finally get rid of it). Just hoping my furnace, water heater, and washer/dryer are going to work after this. And the submerged electrical outlets...yikes. Everything's unplugged, but I don't know if there'll be damage. Sure hope not.I do not live on a flood plain so I don't have flood insurance. Cranston and Warwick are much worse, plus the Weather Channel's here. That's never a good sign! I've never seen it like this. I just got back from buying some hipwaders and there's a lot of local roads closed. If any of it $$ comes my way, right now I'm for the stimulus. 😀
Why did you have the fire department come in? Is that standard to do? Oh, and I hope you're computer that you're logging on to the forum from isn't in the basement. ;D
Better start dumping bleach into the water in the basement ASAP, right? No, actually I imagine there are way to stave off mold problems. Just don't let it get to bad…mold can really spread and devalue homes (obviously).
Oh well, nothing I can do about it except move uphill or a desert. I'm more worried about the appliances than the mold right now. They say just bleach it down after all the water is out, and if I dry it well, it won't be that bad. I'll just fill a spray bottle with bleach and go at it (there are some benefits of not having a wife to freak out about things like that) Considering I'm such an ornery &%^*#, I actually have friends. A few guys are coming tomorrow to help me out. They were going to come now, but I told them not to bother because the backyard is still flooded and it will be futile. It's not raining that hard now, but it would be nice if that water level would go down. (any soil experts around here? 😀 ) At least it's not going to be that cold, so I don't need the heat on, and the next few days are supposed to real nice, dry, and sunny.
Has the water level receded at all yet? I heard it's only supposed to get worse with the rain. You should send some of the rain to my part of the country. We didn't get any snow at all in March for the first time in recorded history. I don't think it's rained here in a few weeks and are in need of some precipitation.
Not much, still can't pump the basement. If you have a 1500 mile hose I can borrow, it's all yours. ;D The rivers got real bad this morning but are receding slowly. They even closed part of Rt. 95! I can't believe some of the aerial pictures of the state they are showing on the local news.
Hope the water gos down soon. Flooded basements suck. Ours flooded last year but we only had about 4 inches of water and all our appliances are up on platforms bevause the previous owner told us it floods occasionally if the spring melt/rain combination is to heavy.
And they better be correct! Finally got two pumps, not going too quickly, but it's going. Had to "MacGyver" something through my dryer vent. Backyard still flooded, but it's almost away from the door.
This has just been an absolute nightmare. My stress level is..well..quite high. By Saturday, I was down to about 2 inches. I had to go somewhere for a while Saturday and I didn't want to leave the pumps running. I shut them off around 3PM. When I got back about 11:30, I had 8 inches of water! Discouraged isn't even a good enough word. I turned them back on, and by morning it was down to 3 or so inches. I was finally able to find two pumps at Home Depot, so I had 3 going all day Sunday (I wanted to give one a rest because it's borrowed and I didn't want to break it) and spent the day taking stuff out my basement. I am at about an inch now.I noticed some cracks in my foundation which is where the water must have seeped in (quickly, I may add) and I sealed them with some hydraulic cement. I'll do a better job, or hire someone to do it after (if) it all dries out. On a good note, the furnace guy is here now and he says it's not THAT bad, plus I just put my washing machine through a cycle and it looks like that works. My water heater doesn't work and neither does the drier, so I might need new ones. A plumber is coming Wednesday to install a sump pump and maybe a water heater. And yesterday I registered with FEMA. Someone is supposed to come to check out things hopefully in the next few days. (Feds will be here, so hide the guns!) Hey, maybe I'll get a grant or qualify for a low interest loan or something. It's supposed to rain again Friday night, I hope they're wrong.
