I found an article, IMPEACHMENT AND THE END OF THE FOURTH GREAT AWAKENING, which claims that the impeachment of Bill Clinton signaled the end of the “Fourth Great Awakening”. I am not sure when it was written, but after the 2004 presidential election I think that a case could be made that we are still in this Awakening.
I think it is problematic to assert definitive beginnings and ends of any movement which is defined by vague boundaries and encompasses a large quantity of the cultural thought of a group.
Nonetheless, 2004 brought us things such as a backlash over the Janet Jackson Superbowl incident, the film “The Passion of the Christ”, and a conservative moral struggle to keep George W. Bush in the White House for four more years. If anything, 2004 was a year that the Christian base was mobilized into an effective cultural and political force.
Therefore, if any argument is going to be made about a Fourth Great Awakening, I would make no claim yet that the fat lady has sung.
