San Francisco 1906, some months before the earthquake. Traffic was chaotic, there were no rules of priority nor traffic lights; cars were driven from the right side!!I enjoyed watching the dress of the pedestrians. The camera was fixed in front of a tram.http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k
That is very interesting. I don't believe I had ever seen that before, but it's such a great glimpse into the early-20th century. Everyone was dressed up (normal for those days, I guess) and black/dark was the universal color of clothing. Pedestrians had to contend with trolleys, horse-drawn carriages/wagons, and automobiles. It seems like the tram was not going very fast – perhaps only 5 mph?
A native of the city, I do not recall Market Street having a rise that obscured half the Ferry Building at the end. Perhaps the quake leveled the street.
Pretty cool.. some of those cars were cutting it close from hitting something or being hit…Amazing how horses, carts, cars, trolleys and pedestrians managed to coexist on the same street without any traffic control. One thing about back then that I think should come back is hats! 🙂
Could not have been 1906. There are way too many cars on the street. There are some Model T's in that film, the Model T did not even go into production until 1908. The film was possible, I just think the date is off. I would guess the film was made around 1910-1911. There are several Model F's in the Filma as well as a few Packards It was certainly not made in 1906.The funniest part of the film is the kids who are running in front of the Tram as if they are playing chicken with it.Here is an interesting video of what the city looked like in the aftermath.
