Shamelessly lifted from another forum I frequent – a looping slideshow of photos from Iwo Jima – mostly from when the Air Force took over operations for escort duties to Japan and as an emergency landing strip. Also some good 1945/2010 before and after photos.http://picasaweb.google.com/7thfighter/IwoJima?authkey=Gv1sRgCIW06db_6oth&feat=email#slideshow/5435676392830656578
Some of those before and after shots are especially interesting. There's one view atop Mount Suribachi…if the modern photo was taken in the exact spot as the one during WWII, then it's amazing how much things have changed.
Very cool photo album. I knew plenty of B-29's had landed on Iwo but did not know there were P-51's based there. I wonder how many cracked up on landing, apparently it was lots.
Very good link, thxHow did you do to unearth that ?
Simplistic, yet effective, animation of the Battle for Iwo Jima. This map portrays the lead-up and the invasion of the island including the locations where Medal of Honor recipients earned their decorations.http://www.historyanimated.com/Iwo.html
