Could someone please tell me the differences between the two. Here's my take, tell me if I'm way off or if I got it.Capitalism is private entities doing what they have to do on their own to make money.Corporatism is the government taking those private entities (like Halliburton or GE) and doing what the government wants them to do. Is this basically correct?
What is the context in which the word “corporatism” is being used? I would have a different take on the definition you provided, but I should make sure I have the correct usage of the word.
My understanding of the words (and I could be wrong here about the second):Capitalism is simply the free market system which involves little, if any, government interference in the normal operations of supply and demand.Corporatism is something like the advanced free market stage at which point corporations (entities owned by shareholders) have grown to a point that they rival governments in power. Governments become so concerned about creating jobs, getting tax revenue, and offering citizens new goods and services that they bend over backwards to ensure that corporation build factories/centers within their borders, and then remain there permanently. Political policies are shaped for the good of the local corporations, even if this sometimes conflicts with what is good for the local citizens.

That is my understanding of the meaning of the terms as well.
I don't think that GE fits into the issue of “corporatism” with the issue of making greener cars quite like your first post indicated. It may be that “corporatism” has been raised to refer to GE laughing its way to the bank because it's doing this on the taxpayer's dime. This would be an example of a for-profit corporation which has been able to convince the government to do its bidding. If GE fails in its venture, its shareholders (of which I am one) are not out of money, but the taxpayers are.
Think of corporatism as the beginnings of plutocracy or oligarchy….namely a collusion of powerful economic interests pushing their own agenda within the government.
