I'm kind of surprised they made a story out of this. I suppose it was the fact that it was a kid who was involved. I imagine there are a number of errors on museum label descriptions that go by unnoticed by most. The curator mentioned in the story, Helen Evans, is one of the people we've talked about from time to time in the graduate class I took this semester on Byzantine art.
