Has anyone else been following this idea by the UN to start a sort of internet tax? Number one I think Baaaaad idea. But ow that the idea has been thrown on the table I can see some countries going with it because government always wants more money. Apparently the scheme is to implement it much like they used to do with international phone calls. Given that I am immediately skeptical anytime the UN is involved in something I am not exactly objective. Do you guys think this has a snowballs chance of passing? I can see countries like China, Russia, and Iran jumping on it for its possibilities of information control.
I have not been following it closely but it always seems like there is periodically some call for a global tax or fee of some sort that is being proposed. It reminds me that there is always a politician somewhere wanting to find more ways to tax the people (remember the carbon tax?). Without reading the story I don't know why they want to raise money, but I would wager that it has something to do with the creation of a body to regular such and such, to create more red tape and more bureaucracy. However, if we hear that the money is going to be used in any way to fund “initiatives” in poor countries, you can guess that socialist views are not far from the proposal.
The logic in the article is that in the old days developed countries got a huge amount of money from international phone calls but since the advent of the internet that lucrative source of graft has gone away. This idea is painted as a way to regain that money. Apparently even the Obama administration is adamantly opposed to the idea.If nothing else, this bears watching.
