I am approaching completion on my first book and am probably going to self publish using Createspace and Amazon Kindle Direct.  All my research points to self publishing being the wave of the future.  I have read several self-published books recently, ones that I purchased and some I got for free from the author for review purposes.  The quality can be uneven but I have found a few gems and they seem to run 50-50.What do you guys think, is self-publishing a viable route to putting a book out there in today's environment?

Why not?  Unless you already had other things published with a company, it's probably not a bad idea to publish yourself.  From what I have heard, even with an agent, it's not easy to have a work picked up by a publisher.  Honestly, you'd probably get a wider audience quicker by self-publishing, and perhaps based on that someone could see it and decide to publish future works of yours.  Actually, let me modify this.  I think that if the work is fiction, then self-publishing is a much better idea.  If it is non-fiction, then maybe not.

If you have exhaustedall other possibilities. There are some decent small independents who absorb all costs of publishing and distribution. My three novels have been published by a small indie and I have no complaints.

Well, I am thinking the target audience for this book is not one that spends a lot of time in B&N or Waldenbooks.

Have a marketing plan, and if you have what is known as a “platform” so much the better.

I have somewhat of a plan but I am going to basically go with the mud against the wall plan for this book.  You know, throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.  It is a very niche topic making use of my military and outdoors experience.
