I saw these events out in Rhode Island so Skiguy will be able to be our representative and report back to us on them. Here's on on June 30:
A DAY ON THE BATTLEFIELD: DEMONSTRATIONS FROM THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION...The sights and sounds of the Revolution come alive through demonstrations by regiments from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Hear the boom of the canon, witness the beautiful horsemanship of America?s first cavalry, smell the gun powder, and see the equipment and uniforms that were a part of the soldier?s everyday life....
While that should be quite the patriotic experience right around the Fourth of July, there's another, perhaps more practical, event scheduled for September 29:
STONE WALL WORKSHOP...Learn to build and repair traditional stonewalls in this hands-on experience. Join master class instructors Chris and Dan Smith for their fi fth year of this active workshop.
This would be helpful especially for anyone who is breaking into property line restoration or even wants to try to capture a more traditional look to one's yard. See the info here:http://www.newportrestoration.com/education/education.html
I would go to that Revolutionary War demonstration, but this weekend is when the Tall Ships are coming to Newport. That just means lots and lots of traffic and huge crowds. yuk.
Well then maybe you can tell me how to build a stone wall. I'm trying to build a very small one myself and I'm probably missing something (is there a wrong way to put stones on top of one another)?

Yes, make sure all fingers and toes are clear. ;D ;D

Your foundation must be plumb and that begins with setting the cornerstone. The cornerstone is the most important stone you must set...after you get your line from that, you're good to go.
Pray tell, how does the cornerstone go when you have a mile-long stone wall that goes in one direction?
Ask the Chinese, they seem to be pretty good at 1000 mile long walls. ;D
In California we have what are known as Coolie walls everywhere. They were built from the 1860's probably through the turn of the century and hundreds of miles still survive and are still in use.
