I was never big into running. More into rollerblading or biking, but I do run occasionally. One thing I like about it is that it increases muscle mass in legs even more than weights do, so I would like to get into running even more. I'm having a foot problem. I've had arch pain before but this is different. Rather it's the tendon (?) on the outside of my right foot that's been hurting. Why is this? My sneakers are good, well they better be, I spent enough money on them. I can run, but I have to keep absolutely perfect form, and I can't run sprints anymore. Is it a pre-stretch/warmup issue? Any tips? Is it maybe because I'm almost 50, not a regular runner, and something I just need to work up to gradually?

Really?? Are you sure about this? Normally an exercise like running is going to improve tone but not so much mass. High weight/low reps will normally give you the mass.

I do not run unless I am being chased ;D so I am not exactly sure. Sounds like it could be your body adjusting to the pounding, or perhaps even something from the shoe that you are not noticing. Try out this site:http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_5/191.shtml
Well, not sure, but it seems my thighs are bigger from running rather than lifting or maybe it's because I added running to my normal routine. All this cardio has resulted in the loss of back fat and love handles, so maybe it just appears the legs are bigger. 😀Can't really find any web source for this type of pain. Most of it is about fallen arches. It feels like that, but it's on the opposite side. Oh well, I'll just stretch more and see if that helps.
I will email you a copy of the army PT manual. Appendix E is about how to select the right running shoe. If you are having arch pain it is probably because you don't have the right shoe for your type of foot. It probably sounds funny but it is true. I can only where Nike's because there shoe is the right shape for my foot. I hate running but have been doing it for 21 years as part of my job. The PT manual is actually a pretty good book and has lots of good Physical Fitness information in it, all of it is backed up by solid research too.The file is 6MB so I can't post it here.
