As I skim over the Bill of Rights for the umpteenth time, I suddenly realize that I am looking at a document that holds with it my entire future, as well as, my past. It can not be considered a living document as there are many facets to the Bill that just aren’t going to change. We will always have a right to free speach, freedom of religion, and fredom to peacefully assemble. We will always have the right to bear arms in protection of family, self, property, and country. We will always have the right for our homes to be void of soldiers in non-war time and only by congressional appointment. We will always have the right to privacy in our papers, places, homes, and …………NOT ANYMORE!!!!!!! Seems the old Bill of Rights is up for interpretation by the Supreme Court, so, depending on what the SC says is whether we maintain any rights or not. At least under this system we had a fighting chance. Now we have The Patriot Act, goodbye Civil Rights. Comments?
Comengetit: Glad to see you found your way over here. Your contributions will make this forum lively. I have to admit I am no fan of the Patriot Act, but as you will recall on that Posse Comitatus thread, I think the government needs modern tools and protocols to deal with the War on Terror and the global threat of terrorism in general. Our free and open society is more vulnerable to freelance attacks, and therefore the need for a security apparatus that is transparent (in the background and unseen) is required. Our Bill of Rights is not a detriment or hindrance to beefing up our security. It is the reason we are targeted....those who hate it are jealous of the freedom it guarantees. Amerians will allow tighter security measures if they are not overtly seen in their everyday lives. I think we can put something like this in place without getting all Orwellian about it. I'll have to think more on this as to how I think it could be done. 😕
Actually, I think the people need the power and protocols to deal with the terrorist threat. The federal government’s responsibility and power ends with foreign military campaigns and controlling who and what enters this country. So far: They have been being too PC in fighting a war against Muslim extremists, causing the Iraq conflict to stagnate somewhat. They have not secured our borders so terrorists and supplies could walk into our country rather freely, along with the 10 million+ illegals. They have failed miserably in the war on drugs. If we can't keep millions of pounds of narcotics from coming into this country, how are we supposed to keep NBC weapons from getting into our country? In light of this, we now have the Supreme Court and the gov't undermining our freedoms in order to "win" the war on terror. The AWB and all the other laws based on 'interpretations' of the Consitution have eroded our 2nd Amendment rights, the Patriot Act infringed heavily on the 1st Amendment, and repealing the PC act would put the 4th, 5th, and 10th at risk. We need to restore rights to the people, the gov't keeps taking away our rights and providing failure in return. So far it hasn't been a good investment
The people cannot defeat terrorists by themselves. They are not equipped to handle the threat, nor are they predisposed to do so. We have to live our daily lives and earn a living, how can we aid the governmnet in the war against terror beyond our vigilance and determination not to give into the fear the terrorists wish to instill in our hearts? We need to give our government the mandate it needs to wipe out terrorism globally (at least to a manageable degree) so that we can get back to the business of living the American Dream. I know what Dean Cascio calls me when I say these things, but he is wrong. It is not cowardice to equip the government with the necessary means to combat our enemies for our personal safety and security, it is in fact bold and requires much faith that the government will not abuse the powers we give it. Our enemy has resolve to see us destroyed, we need to show our enemies that we have resolve equal and greater to their own. I don’t think Americans should have to put up with the threat of terrorism out of a greater fear of our own government. Only brute force can stop the terrorists. Hamstringing our government…..not allowing it to take off the gloves…..is far more dangerous in my mind. America has survived a bloody Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, World Wars, the divisions of Vietnam, and has grown into a more resolute nation despite these great difficulties. I am supremely confident that we can do so again in the face of global terror. If we allow this war to escalate into a quagmire of internecine conflicts all over the world, we will lurch toward world government faster than if we don’t make sacrifices now by giving our government what it needs to prevent such a hell inspired scenario from coalescing into reality.
