I am just finishing the last of the trilogy authored by Mr. Evans on the Third Reich. They are writtenwith a heavy emphasis on statistics and contain information I have found nowhere else. Although theyare a bit dry they do paint a marvelous picture of that era and the author is not fearful of discussingsubjects that may well vex some readers. The three volumes are:1.The Coming of the Third Reich2.The Third Reich in Power3.The Third Reich at WarAll the major characters are covered fully and many minor voiced dredged from diaries and unpublishedletters shed new light on a well documented era. These are excellent tomes for those they think theyknow about The Third Reich and this reader was left with a sense of humility.
Check out Adam Tooze's The Wages of Destruction. It is an excellent economic history of the Nazi Regime. You could also look at Niall Ferguson's War of the World, which covers the economic and social aspects of both World War's fairly well. I dont necessarily agree with Fergusson's thesis but he musters an impressive array of figures in support of it.
Read Ferguson, will read Tooze. After three volumes of Evans I need a fun break so I am reading a bookby Joyce Appelby "The Relentless Revolution--A History of Capitalism. Thanks for the tip.
