There used to be a guy in my wifes home village who did not have a nose courtesy of the Eastern front in WWII.  The story I heard was that it got shot off somewhere around Leningrad.  He wore a handkerchief over his face and looked like a cartoon robber, when he took it of(which I only saw once), there was only a jagged hole where his nose should have been.  He was supposed to have been a real ladies man before the war.  I only talke to him once or twice and German was not that good back then.  He died a few years ago though.  His is the only other similar case I know of.  Strange things happen in wars.

Dalton Trumbo was roundly criticized for writing that book and the film was met with hostility.  He wasdebarred from his profession and had to be brought back secretly as he was or perceived to be a "Red"I read the book when I was quite young and did not get the idea that war was hell to much later--sort of like Sherman.
