Are you talking for logistic movement? I could imagine the Erie Canal played a role there, but as far as I know, there were no major canals in any of the areas where major campaigns took place. The closest I can think of is Grant's attempt to by bypass Vicksburg with a canal through the swamps, an effort he abandoned as impractical. Can you expand on what you are asking?
Ok, The James River and Kanawha Canal went from Richmond to West Virginia. It may have been slow but the north want to be destroyed. Ther Was also C.O., Many were used to move food, crops, Materials to Centers were they helped perople and war effort.I am the piont person in Richmond Virginia for James River And Kanawha Canal, and tour guide.
Every time the Union tried to cross into Virginia they found it difficult to navigate the Virginia river system because they rendered their forces vulnerable. This is probably the reason McClellan opted to invade via the Peninsula where he could better manage the logistics.
The Middle of virginia was a good I deal if they had Grant there. It would have taken much more to have pushed in to Richmond, if they had cover there flanks, they could have divid southern force enought to come in to Richmond. Ever they were able to come with in 5 miles from the west. Lee almost got caught at Orange Court House.
