KeymasterHas anyone read Pat Buchanan's book, Churchill, Hitler, and “The Unnecessary War”? I consider Buchanan to be the most historically-intelligent of any modern-day politician.

ParticipantWhat about Newt Gingrich? Isn't he actually a History professor at Pepperdine or some other school?

Perhaps as a professor of literature? His books seem to deal with historical fiction.

ParticipantNewt's Bio also shows him holding a PhD in Modern European History from Tulane and that he taught it from 1970-78. But you are correct in that most of his work is either historical fiction, which I abhor, or modern Political Science.

KeymasterFrom what I understand there are politicians who have Phds who you wouldn't suspect….people like Al Gore. I recall hearing that he didn't want to be referred to as “doctor” since that kind of separates him from the “people”. I suppose that is the approach a lot of politicians take.

ParticipantOn topic I suggest Lukac's The Last European War to supplement Buchanan's book.

Newt Gingrich is way beyond Pat, but Pat is pretty decent in his own right.

I would venture that many are "honorary" degrees

ParticipantThat does sound like a very good read. I will put it on my Christmas list maybe. Although it's getting kind of late for that hehe. I don't really believe that WWII is any different from other wars in saying that it was unnecessary. No war is truly necessary, however, obviously there are civilizations that feel they are. Hitler wanted to take over the world and wouldn't stop until somebody stopped him. Obviously, other sovereign would have big problem with that to put it lightly. So I don't see how this war would be less necessary than others.__________My stupid history professor is making us write a term paper over Christmas Break. Professor Scrooge. Grrrrrrr >:(
