Been having trouble lately with this process- helpsvc.exe- taking up all my resources. (Task mananger shows it using 99% of memory sometimes!) It lasts a few minutes, then calms down. When it's going it makes everything stall. I searched for a fix and found one but haven't tried it yet. Was wondering if anyone else ever experienced this same problem. Using XP with the latest service pack.
I found a site that referred to this problem and gave some possible solutions.First, are you sure you're using SP3? You can also go to Start > Run > type "Winver" and it will let you know for sure.Second, it is a known problem. See here:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;839017Third, you can try this. I'm not 100% sure if it would mess something up but it seems like something that you could reverse easily enough without doing harm. Go to:1) Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services 2) Scroll down to "Help and Support"3) Right click on "Properties"4) Change startup type from "automatic" to "manual"5) You may need to rebootSomeone also linked to this site, which had a potential solution which is "above my paygrade". ;Dhttp://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_h.htm
Is that the issue with SP3? I installed it on my wifes machine and it locked up. I eventually uninstalled SP3 to get her machine running again. Luckily my laptop runs Vista and I love it so far. I think Vista is the best OS Microsoft has fielded yet.
I love it, but then again my machine was built for Vista. I have converted my wife and she wants a new machine now. Vista is infinitely more friendly than XP. Like anything else it takes a little getting used to but I think it is much more intuitive in its interface than previous versions. Plus, I love the gadgets yu put on the sidebar, I have one that tracks exchange rates, one that gives realtime weather, moonphase, network status, system resources, and one that counts the days until I retire from the military, the last is my favorite.
Did they get all the bugs out? I heard when it was first issued there were some things that needed to be worked out...like all new OS's.
I think those issues were more applicable to doing geek stuff and for users with higher end/specific requirements. For the average person using the computer for internet & word processing, it wouldn't have been a problem. But yes, I think that many problems with Vista have been fixed since it's been on the market for something like 1 1/2 years now.
