I believe that Cordoba was the Muslim capital of Andalusia (Spain) during the Middle Ages, was it not? It's interesting how the Muslims of Spain flourished culturally even as they separated themselves politically from the Muslims of the East.

The "horseshoe" arch was a specific type of arch that differed from the "Roman" arch, which was the bread and butter feature of Roman architecture. Below, see a horseshoe arch and then a Roman arch. Note how the voussoirs of the horseshoe arch (the individually-cut stones, including the keystone, that create the arch itself) form about a 3/4 circle, whereas the Roman arch makes a 1/2 circle.
