ParticipantI got this picture from a story in the MailOnline this morning. It is an Egyptian Army M-1 tank in which the crew is apparently just hanging out watching the protesters throw rocks at each other. I wonder what they think they are accomplishing? I dont think they are looking imposing given that they have a barrel cover on the main gun. You can shoot through the barrel-cover but only once, because when you do it makes like Elmer Fudd's shotgun when Bugs sticks his finger in it. American barrel covers are rubber and I once saw a tank fire with the barrel cover still on, that tank commander was not happy when he found out he would have to pay for a new barrel. The story also has some pretty comical pictures of guys with empty water bottles and pots taped to their heads as field expedient helmets.

ParticipantOf course they don't look scary at all: the Egyptian Army is providing most if not all presidents since Muhammad Naguib, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar El Sadat and Hosni Sayyid Mubarak. Low profile but still in the run !

ParticipantA parked tank with its cannon pointed away is not too scary. But that can change in about two seconds.

Until he tries to fire with the barrel cover on. The gunner better have input the correct data because he won't get a second shot. On second thought, I wonder what their maintenance standards are. Abrams' are maintenance queens they will beak just sitting in the motor pool and it takes a lot of work to keep them running.

ParticipantTanks are bad for riot control. Very messy 🙂

ParticipantAs soon as the riots started in Tunisia for some reason the phrase “whiff of grapeshot” kept running through my head.

A 120mm smoothbore isn't great for crowd control anyway (120mm buckshot round with rubber pellets? maybe just rock salt!). While the machineguns offer some level of deterrent, as does the thought of 60+ tons making little protestor pancakes, the better option might be to put it in reverse and chase them with the super-heated exhaust.

You ever seen a 120 fire canister? It is way cool. I saw my Troop CDR take out a car full of Jihadis at 200m with canister in September of 2004. Canister makes beehive rounds look like BB guns.

Participant1150 tungsten balls — nice… ranges out to 500 meters — nice….I have to say, it's an infantryman's friend.Overall, looks like a very nice way to ruin someone's day.

ParticipantLeaves kind of a red, chunky mist in the air that is pretty nasty when you have to drive through it. It took us several hours on the washrack to get our tracks clean after we got out of Samara.

ParticipantI just think it is amusing that the Egyptian army has deployed tanks near the protests/riots and then does nothing, not even look intimidating. I would bet Mubarak is a little unhappy with his military right about now.
