A photo of New York from 1848 is up for sale. I didn't realize they were taken as far back as 1848, but the image is actually not too bad. Unfortunately it wasn't taken any closer to the house.1 of earliest photos of New York City to be sold
I believe the first Daguerreotypes were taken in the late 1830's. I am researching a paper on the Revolution in Berlin in 1848 and have run across a few pictures of the barricades there and also in Paris. I love them because it is a true window on the past. How nice would it be if this technology had existed in Roman times? I would love to see an actual picture of Caesar and the Forum in its prime.
