ParticipantHey All! I am currently a Freshman in college (undergraduate) and I'm planning on getting a degree in History. I really really love Ancient Roman history (especially Julius Caesar) and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions and/or tips that would help me! I'm considering getting a PhD as well. Thanks! 🙂

ModeratorWelcome aboard. You certainly came to the right place for these types of questions as these folks have helped me a lot.Since we share the same interests (although mine is more Greek than Roman) and goals, I would recommend learning a language as soon as you can. In your case, which is similar to mine, I would suggest Latin. I am currently taking Greek but plan to continue with this same tutor in Latin as well.Where do you go to school?

ParticipantGet your Latin and Greek on as well as your German and Hebrew. Learn these names well: Michael Grant, H.H. Scullard, Geza Alfody, Harold Lamb, W.H.C. Frend, and Chester G. Starr. You will be reading something from these guys I promise you. Also, get copies of Polybius, Livy, Plutarch, Seutonious, Tacitus, Seneca, Pliny, Josephus, and Caesar. Pay two drachmas and call me in the morning. LOL

ParticipantThank you so much! I really appreciate the tips! I have been studying (on my own) Julius Caesar and the late Republic for the past 8 years or so. I am now obtaining a degree from Western CT University, and they are known for their History dept. It is hard for me to come by a Latin/Greek tutor but I am definitely trying and interested in learning. I want to go to NYU for graduate school as well, but one thing at a time, for now. 🙂 Thank you again.

Have you tried contacting local universities, schools, or libraries? That's how I found my tutor. Don't know how far you are from Fordham, but they have a pretty good Classical studies language program, or so I heard.

If you go to NYU, make sure you hook up with John Philip Reid. He's not in your area, but he's a top notch scholar.
