Where the Goths made up of both the Visigoths and Ostrogoths? If so, what caused their split?
Visigoth means “western Goths”, and Ostrogoth means “eastern Goth” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GothsThe split was very likely due to an increase in population and to conquer more terrirtory. They did not split because of animosity towards each other.
It seems to me I used to know this but forgot. Thanks for clarifying the difference. I'll try to keep this stored in the memory banks from now on.

The Visigoths were people making up the barbarian group which crossed the Danube around A.D. 376 in order to flee the Huns. This group was eventually double-crossed by the Romans, went into Italia, and was later permitted to remain in the empire by the Romans, but only in the area of southwest Gaul. The Ostrogoths, if memory serves me correctly, basically materialized where the Visigoths were originally at around the Danube to the northeast of Italia. I believe that Odoacer was perhaps the most famous of the Ostrogoths.
