Which civilization/nation do you think has ever had the greatest military compared to its peers at its particular point in time?
Hands down, Rome. They defeated all comers for almost 1,000 years and built an empire whose effects have lasted down until the present day. The legionairre was the definition of an effective soldier for almost 700 years.
Yes, but what time period? Can you narrow it down to a century or so? I guess I forgot to mention that in the original question.
The army of Philip II of Macedon. He was able to make all of Greece submit to him. Even the most powerful army of that time, Persia, could never do that. (granted, the Peloponnesian War severely weakened Greece. But still)Edit add: Sorry, this didn't really answer the question. I just think this is the greatest military so far in my studies.
