Just got back last night. Went to Ft. Myers where my friend lives and 5 of us went to Key West for the day Saturday. My buddy's a great guy, but the others we went with are less into health (in other words, they can't walk far) and more into drinking, so we had to accomodate them. I wanted to check out Key West a lot, but they wanted to hit the bars instead. After the second bar, I went on my own and walked around the island a bit. Maybe it was the company or maybe it's just me, but Key West was no big deal. It was just like Martha's Vineyard or Cape Cod, only hotter. I could never spend a week there because I would be bored after a day or two. Not really a big fan of tropical places anyway, plus I'd rather be a sober tourist than a drunken one. Give me mountains (or Greece) any day. If I had the choice of Hawaii or Colorado, I would pick Colorado in a heartbeat. My next trip, which won't be for a while, will either be out west or Europe. (and as selfish or anti-social as this sounds, it will probably be by myself)
I've never been to the Florida keys. I wouldn't mind going just to see what it's like. Isn't there a Hemmingway museum or house down there? Some day I would love to go Greek island hopping. Last time I was in Greece, I went through the Peloponnese, through Athens, and up to Delphi. I'm sure you're enjoy doing some of that (well, maybe except for urbanized part of Athens). There's something about wandering around an ancient, relatively small piece of land that really puts life and history into perspective.
Wanted to go to the Hemingway house, but never made it. :- All I saw was Margaritaville (great cheeseburgers!), the southern most point, and Mallory Square.I would love to do Greek island hopping, but not to lay on the beaches, it would be because it's mentioned in Herodotus or Thucydides and to see ancient ruins if there are any on the islands. (OK, it would be kinda cool to swim in the Aegean...wait, it would be cooler to kayak in it....if I close my eyes, I could make believe it's a trireme and ram Iranian kayakers)

Ha, yes of course - I was not thinking of the fun being to "lay on the beach" (I burn anyway)...just that it would be cool to see the azure waters that the Greeks saw, or swim near the beaches that Odysseus swam in (or his factual counterpart), or to see the ruins that where the cities in the Delian League once lived in. If you go in a canoe instead of a kayak you can have somebody put wax in his ears and accompany you and tie you up at you maneuver around the islands. That would be fun....odd, but fun (or maybe just funny). ;D
I am cut from the same cloth, though I do enjoy a few indulgent outings interspersed. We went on a Disney land/sea vacation a couple of years back that my wife and kids thought was the greatest thing ever. I paced the ship like a caged cat. The funny thing is I enjoy sailing small boats.
