    A) Correct you are!B) I think I asked the question wrong because I didn't say "county"I thought that stat was interesting, especially since Mississippi is unfortunately lagging in most economic indicators today.  At least it had a gilded past.

    Cotton was king back then and southerners were the rich “elite”…Hard to think that way with today's mindset... I would bet your average person would have said Boston, Philadelphia or New York

    I bet that New York was not too far behind Mississippi because of the rise of commerce there, especially after the opening of the Erie Canal.  Around that time in the first half of the 19th century, NYC surpassed New Orleans as the largest U.S. port.
