There's a new movie coming out in which Cate Blanchette revises her role as Queen Elizabeth, apparently during her squabbles with Philip II of Spain. The movie also stars Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen. I saw the first Elizabeth movie (1998) some years ago and thought it was rather socially-anachronistic and biased. I really wouldn't be surprised if the new movie has the same kind of slant. Still, it might be interesting to see it since movies depicting this era are not that common.
I watched this movie this past weekend. I give it two “mehs”. Of course it was interesting to see the clash of political powers during this high point in the Elizabethan Age but it tried to do too much, thereby leaving too little. The battle with the Spanish Armada was generic in feel even though the cinematography was impressive. And the viewer is left with the sense that Philip II was little more than a remake of Gollum (a la Lord of the Rings) with his troll-like voice and obsession-like tendencies. And would the Spanish Ambassador ever insult the "Virgin Queen" to her face like he did in the movie? I'm really thinking "no".
