Where did the word “Yankee” originate? Besides the obscenely-overpaid baseball team by that name, you might notice foreigners refer to all Americans (not just northern states) as “Yankees” (or perhaps “Yanquis” in Latin America). There must be a particular place where this word came from. Anyone know?
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American. To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner. To Northerners, a Yankee is a Easterner. To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander. To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter. And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
According to wikipedia, it is originally meant for just the New Englanders. Some interesting stuff here. Towards the end of thearticle, it gives the origins. They say it's froma Dutch word "Janke".
