Pegleg Lonergan (Peg-Leg) was a gangster who lived in New York during the first quarter of the Twentieth Century. I found this site which has a little information on him, including how he earned his nickname after he lost his leg as a youngster. He went on to be in charge of a gang but was eventually killed on Christmas night in 1925 by Italian gangsters. The reason I bring him up is because my grandfather was apparently a friend of his. I will have to check on this some more, though, to see if I can find out more information. I have been curious about Pegleg for a while and have wondered what role he played in the New York underground scene.

Oh well this is discussion for another thread anyway.
Anbinder's five points focuses on the history of the five points from the early 1800's to it's final demise around the turn of the century. It goes way beyond Gangs of New York.
