Embedding your SMF forum into a portal content management system like Mambo or Joomla? I was thinking about doing that to Religious History, but I'm not sure whether it's worth it or not. I might setup another SMF forum on another database and embed it to see what it looks like, but I wanted to know what you thought about it first. 😛
July 4, 2006 at 2:51 am #5300PhidippidesKeymasterI think I had thought of doing that at one point or another…there's actually a way to do it with phpbb as well (look for “portal” mods). The problem is that I wouldn't have had enough content to merit a portal. I would have had to essentially create a whole site to complement the forum. But then I have to consider what I really want in my site….a complete site or just a discussion forum?

Could we say incorporate WesternCiv, Religious History, and Academic History into one portal site?? It would be like a forum webring or something. I know Postnuke can handle multiple instances of pnPHPBB2.? Of course once we “married” our sites together, it might be difficult to separate them again. 🙄
July 4, 2006 at 5:30 pm #5302PhidippidesKeymasterLol, I think we could have a parent page which presents options for a visitor: Religious History, Academic History, or Western Civilization History.Perhaps another thing to do would be to have a "topic" on my forum which actually directs visitors to the Religious History forum. In such a case, it might be better off to have the same forum theme throughout (with a similarly-themed logo) so that the visitor doesn't think he's visiting an altogether unrelated site. Good idea Donnie...let me think about this some more.
July 5, 2006 at 3:57 am #5303DonaldBakerParticipantWell guess what?? I installed the pnSMF module to my postnuke site at NJC Auction and all I have to do in the admin is type in the location of the SMF install and it integrates right into my site.? Now, all I have to do is upload another instance of the pnSMF module (named differently of course) and I can integrate another SMF site.?
I can do this as many times as I want to.Soooooo…..we could have a super site with our forums in a postnuke install very easily.? I'm currently typing this response on my postnuke site.? Man this opensource stuff is so cool!? Uh check that.......It won't let me do multiple installs.? I tried renaming the directory and everything, but it created errors and conflicts.? So scrap that idea for now.? 😥July 6, 2006 at 4:04 am #5304PhidippidesKeymasterYeah open source is pretty awesome…I'll have to let you in on the coolest open source site….
