A relic of John was apparently found in a reliquary in a church on St Ivan island, near Bulgaria. The article does not say explicitly, but it seems the church, which was built initially in the 5th century was destroyed or built over at some point in time and forgotten about. I always find these “discoveries” to be dubious. Seems like one comes out every six months or so.
Well, I think that the media probably jumps the gun by hyping up the claims sometimes. However, if an academic case can be made then I don't see why we can't be excited for a variety of reasons. It seems like the scholars working on this case are starting to make a case, though the evidence at this point is still somewhat circumstantial.
