I found this story a bit amusing:
Discovery of ancient human remains prompts excavation prior to water line construction
These “ancient human remains” were found not in Europe or Asia, but instead in the state of Florida.
Halbirt said the remains buried underneath Charlotte Street near King Street could date back to the 1500s.
“The possibility exists that some of the original settlers here in St. Augustine who came with Menéndez in 1562 are buried in this location,” Halbirt said.
It is really unusual to hear of this kind of thing. By default, when I think of archaeology in the United States I presume a terminus post quem of around 1700, and that is only in select areas of the country (e.g. New England). It’s easy to forget that Florida’s visitors predated the English settlements by quite a bit.
