I have to describe the nationwide social, cultural, and historical elements of this period. (If only I had taken Amer Hist first). It's nothing big, just a paragraph or two.So far I have: the Civil War and how many families were without the father during that time, slavery issues (think Huck Finn here), industrial growth, corporate greed, and settlement in the West. How were women's issues at that time? Suffrage didn't occur yet, correct? Is there anything big I'm missing? And I'm a little confused at how Tom and Huck could befriend the negro Jim...confused because it was the south after all.
Is this supposed to be based no a reading you did for class or are you supposed to come up with this out of thin air? If your assignment permits you to use outside sources, I suggest you just browse through an encyclopedia and look at the headings for major themes of the war. They should pretty much cover it comprehensively.
I will give you a big hint. Sectionalism, slavery, westward expansion (railroads), gentry (Southern Aristocracy), abolitionism, King Cotton, and the introduction of new technology like the mechanical reaper etc…
Thanks, Don. That's what I need, just some topics to research (and that go with the literature). Writing a short summary of something complex like this isn't easy.
