KeymasterRecently discovered in Ashkelon, Israel, after being exposed by storms that his the area. When statues such as this are found, I wonder whether or not they will be considered significant finds that make their way into textbooks worldwide, or if they become run-of-the-mill antiquities that no one ever talks about outside the specific museum that they're in.Gales unearth Roman-era statue on Israel's coastAnother photo:http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Anthropology--Archaeology/ss/events/sc/021903anthroarchaeo/im:/101214/ids_photos_wl/r554576878.jpg

ParticipantI liked this quote from the story, “”We don't see this discovery as such good news,” said another Authority official, who declined to be named. “Better that relics remain hidden and protected, than that they be exposed and damaged.” Kind of a strange sentiment to hear from an archaeologist don't you thin?

KeymasterYeah I thought that was a bit odd as well. Perhaps they were grieving over other destruction that went on because of the storm. Or perhaps they're fearing that so much land was exposed that looters are bound to get their hands on it before they can properly excavate the place.

ModeratorNot that odd, IMO. I would think most good archaeologists would want it left alone and undisturbed in it's original spot.

KeymasterYes, but “in its original spot” until it is excavated and removed by those archaeologists. Ok, I can understand that if the storm shifted things around totally it could be a pain. But it seems that the silver lining would be the fact that these wonderful artifacts were discovered in the first place.

ParticipantApparently the same storm caused some serious damage to other sites in the area.
