Just finished watching this movie on HBO. Starring Kevin Bacon. It is about a Marine who escorted another Marine home who was KIA in Iraq. It was very respectfully done and very, very difficult to watch. To all who have been there, or know someone was there, or know someone who was KIA in a war, I don't know how you do it. This movie definitely renewed my respect for warriors and their families and friends. Not that I ever felt differently, but it is no wonder why civilizations built monuments to fallen heroes.
Haven't seen the movie but I have put a few friends in the ground. It does not get any easier.
The toughest thing I ever had to do in the Marines was knock on the door to tell the parents. That was 21 years ago this month, and I still brings a lump to my throat like it was only yesterday.
I have had to do one Casualty Notification in my career, it is not something I ever want to repeat. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done and not any easier because I did not know the guy. In fact, you are barred from doing a notification if you know the individual. I got called to do a notification on a guy I had shared a barracks room with for three years, that is a hell of a way to find out a friend died.
