I watched the extended cut of American Gangster last night (Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington). If you haven't seen it, it's about the proliferation of the heroin trade in New York in the late 60s and early 70s. It apparently became pretty bad with the growth of purer and cheaper drugs as the Lucas crime family rose to power. Anyone know how accurate this was, and if this was the pinnacle of heroin use and trade in the U.S.?
