History's mysteries never stop to amaze. Here, it's at Oak Island, Novia Scotia:For Sale: Island with Mysterious Money PitAccording to the article, the mine was discovered back in 1795 and attempts to reach whatever is inside have been thwarted. But explorers have found some cool things:
Through the murk, drill borings and shafts dug by the island's series of owners have detected what seem to be cement vaulting, wooden chests, and scraps of parchment paper. Radiocarbon dating of these artifacts is consistent: whoever constructed the shaft likely did so sometime in the 16th Century.
Simply amazing. A mysterious mineshaft from the 16th Century whose bottom has yet to be reached. I did notice that the article above is from 2005, and the updated Wikipedia entry contains the following:
It was announced in April 2006 that partners from Michigan purchased a 50% stake in Oak Island Tours Inc., for an undisclosed amount of money. The shares were previously owned by David Tobias, and the remaining shares are owned by Dan Blankenship. Allan Kostrzewa, a member of the 'Michigan Group', purchased Lot 25 from David Tobias for a reported $230,000 one year previously.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Island#Documented_historySo now we have a mysterious "Michigan Group" which enters the picture. A quick search finds a "Michigan Group" which is a real estate company, though I'm not sure this is the same one that bought the island (see http://www.michigangroup.com/ ). Now I'm wondering if the island purchasing Michigan Group is something akin to the illustrious Phoenix Foundation (if you know what I mean 😀 ). Thoughts on this? Who could have dug this mine? What's inside?
