The CNN site has the following top ten lists:The best -- and worst -- movie battle scenesI don't think that gore in battle scenes is "good viewing" simply to appease appetites but can show a remarkable realism that gives us a deep insight into the nature of brutal conflict (think Saving Private Ryan, #2 on the list of "best battle scenes"). The "best" and "worst" lists on the site include some works of fiction, but is interesting nonetheless.
The fight scenes from Braveheart rank up there. I also like the gladiatorial combat scenes in Gladiator. Glory had some remarkable battle scenes. Full Metal Jacket had a good sniper scene.
Right, I have to agree with the Braveheart battle scenes….part of the reason why it's my all-time favorite movie. And the list at the link I gave includes King Arthur as having one of the worst battle scenes, and I mentioned my disdain for that movie here. Keira Knightly in battle……not very convincing.
I'd have to rank ZULU a little higher than 7th… especially since it was the inspiration for a couple ranked above it.Also, there were some good battle sequences in Clint Eastwood's two Iwo Jima movies.
What about the opening battle in Gladiator between the Romans and the Germanic tribes? I read that they found the location was going to be cleared of timber and were allowed to use the fire.

That was good except for the fact that the Romans did not fight like that. I have never read that the Roman army stood to receive a charge as depicted in the film. I have always read that they counter-charged when their enemy was within twenty paces and used the combined momentum to break up the enemy formation. This is what s described by Marcus Aurelius himself, as well as Caesar and Vegetius.
My wife and son dont like to watch war movies with me because I always beat them up on their accuracy. 300 is a particularly egregious example of a movie that could have been great instead being horrible through sheer weight of unrealities. I actually got up and left the theater during 300 because it was so stupid, I felt my intelligence was being insulted the whole time.

Sounds like a good reason to see historical movies that take place in times or with themes that you know little about. I was going to say "go to some sappy 19th century romance movie where they don't pick up any guns" but then I realized it might sound like I'm trying to insult you. So instead I'll just say "avoid historical war movies" and you might enjoy it more. Maybe.
The opening scenes of the Normandy Invasion in “Saving Private Ryan” rank right up their with me. I'll never forget my first viewing. I had gone out for Chinese take out, and had settled down for the film, and totally lost my appetite after the opening scenes. Can you say, “Left over Chinese food for breakfast?” 🙁
The Battle of the Crater in Cold Mountain was also remarkable as a Civil War battle.
that is my favorite part of that movie...or when jude law dies i can not decide but one thing i can say is the battle of fredericksburg expecialy the part about the irish bargade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcm8C3xpaRg
