I watched a cool 14-minute video on how NASA satellite imagery was used to discover some archaeological gems of the Maya deep in tropical vegetation Very cool. The video can be watched at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3401/03.html
That stuff needs to be found or the theives and black marketeers will get it all.
I thought about archaeological thieves for a moment, but then I asked myself “how would they ever get a hold of NASA satellite maps? I don't believe the particular ones used can be found on Google Maps! And I'm sure that they aired the NOVA documentary only after they had already excavated a number of the sites. In fact, I think they did the search in 2001.
The problem, is, is that alot of the theives are locals and they know where some of this stuff is already.
