Thanks Skiguy. I'm caught up in all the forums in the student lounge so now I'll turn my attention to adding a few cents in here.
Hi all,I have been posting here for about a week and I love the site and the fact that it is well-moderated as too many forums these days seem to neglect that aspect. I was turned onto the site by skiguy who is a fellow AMU student so I have to say thanks to him for pointing me this way. I hold a BA in World Military History and am currently pursuing my MA in European History. My specialty is 18th and 19th century Prussia, though prior to that I was a generalist with intersts spanniung the gamut from ancient Greece to WWII. I look forward to some stimulating discussion on the board. I am also currently in the US Army with only three years to retirement.
Well it looks like I've got a new opportunity to see some history! I've just received word I'm being stationed at Geilenkirchen Germany. A NATO AWACS base on the German/Netherlands border. Not far from Aachen and the Teutoburg Forest!!!!!!!! I'm loving it!
Sounds like a great place to live. I've never been to Aachen but would like to go sometime. Charlemagne's palatine chapel, which influenced later cathedral design in the Middle Ages (and beyond) is located in Aachen. He may even be buried there.
He's there, Not burried. There is a golden casket that is supposed to contain his remains. It site in the Naive encased in glass. I took a day trip there a few years ago. I'll definately go back.
Say, when you were in England did you go to Westminster Abbey? Seems the more I read about it, anyone who is anyone has been entombed there – major figures & minor figures alike. I don't know how they have so much room.
You're right, there is not a lot of room in there. A lot of the side chapels hold many of the famous kings and queens. You have to buy a permit to take photos in there. I went once. There always seems to be something going on there. I've been around the outside a lot. But only went in once. Worth the time and entrance fee.
Hello all,I just happened to stumble into this forum by chance this morning and have really enjoyed reading some of the discussions.By way of background, I am a Turk that lives in Istanbul and a non-practicing muslim. Actually I wouldn't even call myself that but just force of habit I guess.I am a lawyer and have no formal education in history but I've always been very interested in it. I esspecially enjoy reading about european medeival history.
Hello Nkuler.Istanbul, Huh? I have always wanted to visit Istanbul, it was second on my list of places to go after Rome. I have been to Rome so there is one down. Istanbul is chock full of history and many of the most interesting figures in history have been through there even before it was the Eastern Roman capital. I hope you enjoy the Forum and take part in the discussions. Every perspective is important and not many people from outside the US post on here. I look forward to hearing your take on some of the discussions in here.Once again, Welcoma aboard!
Thank you to you both.I do intend to participate in discussions albeit of course more about the civilizations and time periods that I know something about. For starters I see that the Ottomans have been a little neglected on the site from what I can see so I'll start from my neck of the woods and work my way westward. I couldn't find one but I think it would be great to have some sort of today in history section in the site? It popped into my head while I was reading about the end of WW1 topic, today of course being Bastille day and also the day the second siege of Vienna by the Ottomans began.
