I am very Sure there must be too many since the ancients days to the more modern days who had tried & wanted to unite Europe as 1 single nation. however none successed ! why is it so that Europe can never be conquered & united as one single country?
I would hardly say that Alexander and then later the Ancient Romans didn't succeed. You have to look at why it didn't last. I think it's because the larger the area, the more difficult it is to govern.
The argument could be made the even the Romans did not unite all of continental Europe into one political unit. The closest anyone has come to that is Napoleon and he failed.
The Romans were successful in uniting conquered territories because they exported their culture and values to those places – called “Romanitas”. I'm doing a paper on this right now. Rome may have had an even more difficult time than modern nations given the breadth of its work; even uniting Italia and its cities with differing cultures would likely have been difficult. Anyway, I'm not sure how successful any modern conquering nation has become at exporting its culture to other lands.
