This has more to do with pre-civilization than Western Civ, but it's interesting nonetheless. Scientists are sequencing genes found in Woolly Mammoths and have compared them with modern-day African and Asian elephants. I'm not sure what they'll do with it (Jurassic Park in real life?) but from the article I read scientists can pinpoint when the break between elephant and mammoth took place, less than 8 million years ago. What I found interesting was this part:
According to the team, these dates are strikingly similar to the divergence time for humans, chimpanzees, and gorillas, and raise the possibility that the speciation of mammoths and elephants and of humans and African great apes had a common cause.
Interesting, very interesting.
