ParticipantI thought Xmas was first an ancient winter solstice celebration around December 21 that was later (4th c) used by the Church.

ParticipantDid you know that some people in France stated that Lindbergh was only the first to complete the crossing and survive, with two French pilots (Nungesser and Coli) believed to have reached the coast of Canada ten days before Lindbergh's Spirit of St Louis touched down in Paris in May 1927 ?http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1329178/French-claim-Charles-Lindbergh-NOT-fly-Atlantic.html#ixzz186efUDaR

ParticipantOf course, no need to be an astronaut or a centurion to be allowed to talk or study about those fields. The military might seem special but it's still a part of the society 😉

ParticipantPerhaps the Gauls did not migrate south, but the Greeks did colonize areas of Gaul. The Gauls invaded northern parts of Greece around 280 BC and had major battles at Thermopylae and Delphi.
You're right. In Asia Minor the Celts founded the kingdom of Galatia. Even Alexander the Great received delegations of Celts living near the Adriatic and in 279 BC, the Celts sacked Delphi in Greece. http://history-world.org/celts.htm

ParticipantIn 17th century Spain it was known as mal frances, the French sickness.
Oh, the French disease ? 8)"...syphilis had been called the "French disease" in Italy, Poland and Germany, and the "Italian disease" in France. In addition, the Dutch called it the "Spanish disease", the Russians called it the "Polish disease", the Turks called it the "Christian disease" or "Frank disease" (frengi) and the Tahitians called it the "British disease". These "national" names are due to the disease often being spread by foreign sailors and soldiers during their frequent sexual contact with local prostitutes.During the 16th century, it was called "great pox" in order to distinguish it from smallpox. In its early stages, the great pox produced a rash similar to smallpox (also known as variola). However, the name is misleading, as smallpox was a far more deadly disease. The terms "Lues" (or Lues venerea, Latin for "venereal plague") and "Cupid's disease" have also been used to refer to syphilis. In Scotland, syphilis was referred to as the Grandgore. The ulcers suffered by British soldiers in Portugal were termed "The Black Lion"..."

ParticipantI think the significance here is obviously confined to the symbolic, in light of the history between the nations.
Right

Participantthey're not there? They are out fighting while the brits are reading comics?
You bet ! USA declared war to Germany in 6 April 1917; 2 years after the Lusitania sinking. And shown up on battlefields during spring 1918 ... armistice happening in November 1918. Too short to have a significant impact (except for providing fresh "meat" to the slaughterhouse...)

ParticipantProbably because of the Vietnam war, and “the recent French experience with the Algerian War of Independence was that it was impossible, in the long run, for a democracy to impose by force a government over a foreign population.”Not to mention the feeling De Gaulle had to move France from being a follower of the United States ... (and his repeated denials of UK admission to the EEC)

ParticipantNo, I knew about that, but then they were not there to stay as they apparently are now. At least, until the French pull another one of their pride fits like they did in '66 when they pulled completely out of military cooperation with NATO on a point of pride.
Would you run into a gentlemen's agreement where you won't be authorized to decide about what you can do in your own backyard ?
