And Lee still lives. Makes one wonder.

Glad I lived in San Francisco during those years. Great photos. Thank you.

Definitely more effective than JFK's Ich bin eine Berliner, for after that the wall lasted almost 28 more years. Stirring rhetoric that failed to stir.

I had heard that San Fran also had a shortage of children.  Seriously, not all that surprising seeing how it's the rainbow capital of the U.S.

Yes, my elementary school, Cabrillo, on 25th between Cabrillo and Balboa, was closed two years ago or so for lack of famiies in a neighborhood, Richmond District, now described as affluent, but when I was a boy in the 1940s and young adult, it was a lowe- middle to middle class neighborhood.

I might have been better off going to a community college because I entered U.C. Berkeley as a 17 year old in 1949. The situation was unusual both academically and socially. I had to compete in classes against hordes of WWII and post war vets and the maturity of 20+ real men in the struggle to attract coeds, nearly all of whom were going for their MRS degree in those days. The typical sorority might pledge 25-30 freshmen and as few as five might graduate.

I know the feeling. I began teaching high school when we could still force boys to tuck in their shirts, shave, and settle disputes in the gym boxing ring, and girls to low-key their makeup. Then fear of ACLU lawsuits on behalf of student rights began the decline of dress and discipline in our schools, plus great women who would have been teachers in the old days could become lawyers and such.I am still waiting to see a teacher strike against lack of discipline and especially violence against teachers and students – but no, it is always for more pay and perks.

Not then but later when I visited London several times while stationed in Germany. Never had the German accent though or affected a monocle.  ;D

Homer Lea, 1876-1912 might be an interesting topic. His books, THE VALOR OF IGNORANCE and THE DAY OF THE SAXON predicting war betweeen the USA and Japan and England vs. Germany proved to be accurate, plus some interesting commentsts about the Russians. Those books were required reading in English, German, and Russian, and Japanese military staff colleges but not in the USA. He actively supported the Chinese revolution, rode into Peking with Chinese republicans after the Boxers were defeated, and was the only caucasian present at the inauguration of Sun Yat-sen. The Japanese followed his predicted landing places in the Philippines in 1941 and captured maps showed they planned to do the same in California.

I read somewhere that excluding the gods and cast of the Iliad and Odyssey, the only known for certain historical Greek Women are Xantippe wife of Socrates and Sappho, which illustrates how “anonymous” the rest were.

Many have to be reminded that we are the United STATES, not the United PEOPLE of America as in Ein Volk, Ein Reich.
