Incidentally (and not to throw wood on the fire), the archeologist in that article was the same one featured in the article which we commented on here.

Well. then I should not expect much in the way of critical analysis from that clown anyway huh?Consider the wood thrown. 😀

When you essentially spend your life wallowing in filth I don't think high boots would make that much of a difference.  can't fleas jump unbelievable distances anyway?

Some of the old post offices are beautiful Art Deco buildings.  They were a point of pride for some towns.  I know some near where I grew up that are just amazing.  It is too sad the same kind of artistry does not go into new buildings.

I aim for the pithy comment.  Feel free to plagiarize that one freely. ;D

I think as long as they can keep the buildings from being demolished, it is a good thing.  How much mail do you send through the USPS versus Emails?

According to In the Wake of the Plague, the death toll for doctors during the plague was roughly comparable to that of the population as a whole.

Well, if you think about the sample they had, it was probably not representative of the population as a whole.  Who after all, had the means to be mummified after death?  Most Egyptian mummies that are in a good state of preservation were members of the aristocracy and so would have a comparatively easy life.  It is probably a safe bet to guess that that also holds true for other societies that mummified their dead.  The article does not give a lot in the way of information about eh data set they used.  I wonder which journal the results of the study were published in?  It would be interesting to look at their data tables.

I have heard that bout teeth as well.  It has been attributed to the lack of cane sugar prior to modern times.  That would not stop them from eating fatty foods though.  I saw a Roman cookbook somewhere and the amount of fat in their diet was amazing.  I think it was on the internet, I will have to see if I can find it tomorrow.

The farthest I have gotten is with the max weight and a marble (what we called a thumber when I was a kid).  That one went about 40 feet but the average is closer to 25-30 feet.  It is still too cold to spend too much time playing with it outside and my wife forbade me from shooting it in the house, even with marshmallows.  :'( The biggest problem is I cant shoot gravel because the sling releases incorrectly if the projectile is not round. 🙁

It was a kit, but there were no instructions, only a picture of the finished product.

I don't post as much because I am trying to close out my IT classes and finish this degree.  I have two big projects due in the next two weeks and then a capstone project due two weeks after that.  I should be a certified IT geek in two months time as well as being a history geek.

I agree with you that there has never been a politician I agree with 100%.  What really decides me in whether to support a candidate or not is my subjective judgement of how flaky their views I disagree with are.  What stops me from supporting Ron Paul and libertarians in general are their notions on foreign policy.  I do not see how they think we could realistically retreat into an isolationist stance foreign policy wise. They are either stupid or deluded if they think the rest of the world is just going to pas us by because we don't want to play anymore.

I still think he has some flaky ideas but he is not as far out there as his dad.  I will give them both points for being honest about their positions and sticking to their guns.  I may not agree with all their positions but then I don't have to agree with everything they say.

I finally have it put together and it thawed enough to take it outside and fire it.  I am still putting the video together but below is a picture of my Trebuchet and the crew.Trebuchet-and-Crew.jpg
