At my age, old time for me would mean Peanuts. I have never gotten much of a chance to read anything older than that. I do like the Farside and Calvin and Hobbes.
So what's your take? Why do you think history is important to study?
To me history is what we are, who we are, how we came to be at the place we are today, why we do the things we do, say the things we say and think the things we think. It's really the only subject that influences all others. It dictates the present and the future because they too will soon be history.
Think about it….The #1 Explorer of all time is a person who paid to take a carnival ride. They just make these lists to get people going thats all…and it works. In reality they dont have a clue.
That list is absolutly useless, An Iranian tourist makes it but Lewis and Clark dont? I know Sacajewea was on the list but they covered an awful lot of country without her. Stupid.
This might sound cynical, but the public is simple minded now days, they dont want Dickens, Hawthorne or even Hemingway or Steinbeck, so can you blame the publishers, they are only going to cater to what the market is demanding.
From a entertainment point of view I think It's a miscast, I like cruise as an actor but not in this, Though Far and Away was good. But from the Germans point of view I agree. He's a national hero, they disagree with Cruise' personal decsions, what if another country placed an actor in the role of Washington that we felt took away from the man he was?
