Gentlemen, the first image is an 18th century engraving (posted on wikipedia)… likely somewhat stylized, as would be expected for the period, of Brian Boru; died 23-April 1014 in the Battle of Clontarf. The sword is a clue as it is on the O'Brien crest at the top... not quite visible in the second hint photo. The lions are significant because in the later O'Brien crest they are half gold and half silver. Originally they were all gold as the engraving portrays but in 1543 when Henry VIII conquered Ireland he gave Murrough O'Brien the choice: loose the lions or make them half silver (as Hank had 3 gold lions on his coat of arms) Murrough chose to divide, and, keep them. In addition Murrough was made the 1st Earl of Thomond and the 1st Baron of Inchiquin. The O'Brien's are the only clan in the BE allowed to bear the Royal arms and dress their servants in scarlet livery, as they were not raised to Earldom from something lower but entered peerage having been the Sovereigns of an independent kingdom. The crown, according to legend had been given (along with Brian's sword, shield, scepter, ring, and harp) to the Pope when Brian's son, Donough went on a pilgrimage to Rome. All were subsequently returned to the family except the scepter (unconfirmed) and the crown... said to have been melted down and made into something else as a gift to Henry VIII.(info from: http://www.obrienclan.org.uk/id23.htm)

WallyParticipantAs if… I'd look more like the little guy below.
WallyParticipantThe fellow was not a literary construct, the clue below is subtle but telling, perhaps. Not the same sheild as in the original hint... a later version.Sadly, Phid, according to legend the crown was melted down.
WallyParticipant... too much time... too much time....
...[me] spent at on the computer; never enough time in any bookstore!
WallyParticipant… too much time… too much time….
WallyParticipantPre-dates Richard; picture is from the 18th century though.A hint? see below:

WallyParticipantArticle 1: The Legislative BranchSection 3: [the Senate] 1. Sets down the number, method of selection, term of office, etc.: 2 Senators from each state, originally chose by the legislature of the state concerned, by voters the since the 17th Amendment, serve 6 year terms, each has one vote. 2. Elections and vacancies: 1/3 of the Senate is elected every two years (terms of the first Senate were staggered), 17th Amendment also altered the filling of senate vacancies: State must hold a special election to fill the vacancy, the state may empower the governor to appoint someone to serve until an election may be held.[Think Kennedy seat here.] 3. Qualifications: Establishes qualifications as the following: 30 YOA, US citizen for 9 years, resident of the state represented. [Idea here is that the Senate would be a bit more elite a body and would tend to provide a check on the power of the House.] 4. President of the Senate: The Vice-President; his only duty actually mentioned in the Constitution is to be the presiding officer of the Senate and his only power is to vote in case of a tie. Modern VP?s have an a extended role that varies according to the direction given them by the President. [ex-offico capacity] 5. Other Officers: The Senate chooses their own officers? President Pro Tempore: Ranking member of the majority party (by custom), presides over the Senate in the absence of the VP. If absent post is delegated to a junior member of the majority as a training session. Other Senate officers include the chairs of the various committees, the Secretary, Sergeant at Arms, Chaplain, Parliamentarian, Curator, Historian, and Librarian. Each party also elects within its ranks various officers. 6. Trial of Impeachments: When and if, the House passes a Bill of Impeachment against a Constitutional Officer, the Senate acts as the Court to hear the case. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court acts as the judge when the President is impeached, otherwise the VP would preside and the Senators the jury. It takes a 2/3 vote (of those present) to convict. Cases of note: Three of some interest are outlined below, Andrew Johnson; impeached for violating the Tenure of Office Act (later ruled unconstitutional). The vote was 35-19 to remove him but fell 1 vote short of the required 2/3 majority. Richard Nixon; was never impeached, as he resigned before a Bill of Impeachment could be passed against him. Bill Clinton; impeached for on two items perjury and obstruction of justice, both on slim House votes. The Senate voted 45-55 to remove on one charge and 50-50 on the other? both far short of the 2/3 majority required to remove him from office. 7. Penalty for Conviction: An official convicted may only be removed from office and barred from holding another federal position. Criminal charges still may be sought against the convicted official but that is not part of the Impeachment process or a role of the Senate. Coming soon: Section 4; Elections and Meetings [of Congress]

WallyParticipantThanks, but no credit to me… came from a ret'd military officer.
WallyParticipant.... The solution to America's government budget woes is not more taxes, but less spending.
And will remain so... but ignored. The idea that each program and agency gets funded based on what they spent the previous year does not enocourage thriftiness. As a teacher I saw that those that spent all their funding and begged more got an increase the next year (as well as bail out for the current year) and those that hectored their funds wisely, got the shaft (in most cases)... when I figured this out teaching a class that used lots of expendable materials got easier. 😉
WallyParticipantThis (see attached) from the humor thread of another forum I watch but pretty neat. And I agree with Scout that there are intangibles that our military provides to or brings out in our troops that other countries cannot.
WallyParticipantIn many ways the voice of the our national collective consciousness, IMHO.
